Final Fantasy VIII - Dreamless

Fandom: Final Fantasy VIII
Claim: the fandom in general
Specific characters/pairings: Squall, Rinoa (Squall/Rinoa)
Theme set + Theme number & prompt: Set V, #3, Breathing
Rating: G
Warnings: Squall and his attendant issues.
Summary: Squall lies awake at night
Notes: Feeling my way back into a) fanfic and b) this particular fandom. So this is... it'd be more along the lines of a doodle than a polished work of art, if it were fanart.

Rinoa snores a little, on the in-breath, around three AM or so. Squall lies on his back and listens to her, feels the weight of her against his side, and it's happened so often that he can almost believe that it will happen again. He's never asleep by this time, of course, not even on the days he's trained himself into the ground -- and those are few and far between, because everyone wants a piece of the famous Squall Leonhart, not least his fiancée.

He should mind, really. Sometimes, in the dark of the night, he almost tries to make himself mind, because if he can get angry with them all -- push them away even for these darkest hours -- then it won't hurt as much when they go away. But somehow he can't, not with the sound of Rinoa breathing beside him, the snore of each in-breath, not with her hair against his cheek and her arm flung across his body.

"We're not going away," she'd said to him, and he can't picture her face when she said it or why she said it, only her hand lightly resting on his arm.

And with the sound of her breathing beside him, he thinks he might be starting to believe it.

He closes his eyes and dreams of nothing, and certainly not a rainy night or a boy, alone.
